An award-winning East Neuk beach has been voted among Britain’s best by one of the travel and tourism industry’s best-known reviewers.
TripAdvisor, the online provider of travel appraisals and interactive forums, has named Woodhaven beach in Elie, near Ruby Bay, among the top 20 blue flag beaches in the UK.
The verdict was based on industry research and TripAdvisor reviews.
The firm commented that most people enjoyed the tranquil setting of the beach and the sound of the sea lapping against the shoreline.
Thoughts of amazing coastlines often conjured up images of far-flung corners of the globe – but the British Isles had many that were renowned for their high environmental and quality standards.
Woodside/Ruby Bay was described as “a real sanctuary for holidaymakers who prefer to spend their time exploring clusters of rock pools and spotting seldom-seen wildlife.
“Popular with walkers, it’s a great alternative to the usual hustle and bustle you sometimes find at the seaside.”

Steve Blaney, chairman of Elie’s environmental action group and vice-chairman of the community council, said Woodhaven was an ideal recreational destination as part of Elie, with shops and other facilities within a short walking distance. The area had long been renowned for its beach quality and the continued recognition of the high beach standards in the burgh would hopefully do its prestige yet more good.
“Anybody who wants to come to visit Woodhaven is very welcome in the Elie shops, while there is the water sports centre, sports club, tennis, putting and golf all nearby,” he added.
