The re-opening of five recycling centres in Fife has been hailed a success – and looks set to pave the way for more to start up later this month.

The long-awaited return came this week, and went off without a hitch – unlike the chaos in places such as Edinburgh and Falkirk.

Fife Council re-opened five centres on Monday using an online booking system and specific time slots, and today, councillors thanked the public for ensuring it went smoothly.

Councillor Ross Vettraino, convener of the environment and protective services committee, said: “The centres which were re-opened were those which presented the least challenges relative to social distancing and traffic management.

“Despite the meticulous planning by staff, there was so much that could have gone wrong.People may have turned up without having made a booking or sought access with vans or trailers, which are not permitted meantime or brought bulky waste, which is also not allowed meantime, but that didn’t happen.”

He added: “The community respected the booking system and observed the rules thereby enabling social distancing and facilitating traffic management. Consequently the Council’s primary objective of ensuring the safety of staff and the community was secured.

“Based on the experience, we can now look towards re-opening some of the other centres. I am optimistic that others will be re-opened on Monday June 15th.
