Keep Our Fields Tidy: Rallying call to clean up Kirkcaldy

A Kirkcaldy man was so annoyed about the state of his local playing field that he has set up a group to keep it tidy, and seek out other areas in need of clean-up.

Peter Docherty (31) rallied a group of community-spirited individuals to help him pick up rubbish at the field east of Fair Isle Road, between St Kilda Crescent and Harris Drive.

Now Peter has set up a Facebook page, Keep Kirkcaldy Tidy to look out for more spots around Kirkcaldy which have become strewn with litter.

In just a few hours on Saturday, Peter and six others filled ten bags with litter.

Peter said: “During lockdown I would often be walking to the shop when I would see the field and I noticed how it had become covered in litter.

“So I set up the page and got some volunteers to help.

“It was really bad. There was a lot of glass bottles, cans, and crisp packets.

“Some of it was shredded because the grass had recently been cut.

“We even found some fake grass which had been flytipped.”

Peter is hoping recent lockdown restrictions are eased in future so more litter picks can be arranged.

“We’re hoping for more events in the future.

“I’ve set up the page so people can contact it and say where they think needs cleared up, so we’ll be liaising with other groups in the area to get more tidying up done.

“I think it’s important as I’ve stayed in Kirkcaldy for a long time, and when I first moved here it was never this bad.

“What were once nice areas are now filled with litter.”
