There were also reports of intermittent supply issues as a result of high demand during the hot weather spell.

Kes Juskowiak, national water operations manager, said: “Normal water supplies have now been restored following the discolouration issue experienced by some customers at the weekend. Due to the hot weather we distributed an additional 450 million litres of water to customers on Saturday and Sunday to meet demand, which placed a significant strain on our network.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers and thank them for supporting our initial messages to help protect supplies and use the water wisely. Where customers experience any further pockets of discoloured water, we would ask them to please contact us with details.”

Scottish Water has outlined other ways in which customers can use water efficiently.

Simple, practical steps which we encourage customers to use water wisely include:

Using a watering can rather than a hose to water plants and grass (hoses and sprinklers use about 1000 litres of water an hour – more than 12 baths ad more than three average families’ use in a typical day)

Not using jet washers – which use an average 36 litres of water

Not to use paddling pools – which use an average 400 litres (if pools are used try quarter filling them and using the water to water your garden afterwards)

Taking shorter showers

Using washing machines and dishwashers fully loaded

Only boil the kettle with the water you need
