Ex-Raith star faces police inquiry after cocaine test

The 52-year old is a constable with South Yorkshire Police.

He faces a special case hearing in Sheffield on Tuesday.

It comes after PC Broddle attended at the Professional Standards Department in Sheffield to provide a sample of urine as part of a random drug test.

The sample was sent for analysis and Alere Toxicology have informed South Yorkshire Police that he tested positively for a Class A drug, namely cocaine.

South Yorkshire Police website states: ‘‘PC Broddle’s conduct was unprofessional and inappropriate and breached the standards of professional behaviour, in particular those paragraphs relating to ‘discreditable conduct.’

‘‘This is a breach of the standards of professional behaviour contrary to Schedule 2, Regulation 3 of the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2012 in respect of Discreditable Conduct.’’

Mr Broddle’s hearing will take place at 3,00 p.m. on Tuesday.

His football career saw him play with Sheffield United before coming north of the border.

He made 73 appearances with Raith Rovers, the most famous of which was the 1994 cup final which saw them beat Celtic on penalties to lift the first major silverware in their history.

The former left back also featured for St Mirren, Partick Thistle, East Fife and Ross County before retiring in 1997.

For the past 16 years he has been a serving police officer. He has received awards for bravery.
