The solar eclipse on Friday was memorable for another reason on the Isle of May - just as the nature reserve had a few minutes of darkness, puffins were spotted touching land for the first time this year.

Scottish Natural Heritage reserve manager David Steel said: “It’ll still be some time before they start settling - usually mid-April - as the birds move back out to sea with the onset of any poor weather. However, it was good to welcome them home and lets hope for a good season for these crazy little sea parrots.”
