Fears allayed over future of Kirkcaldy day centre

The parents and carers have been thrown a lifeline

It had been feared that the centre, which caters for people with learning and physical disabilities, was to be closed by Fife Council.

There were also concerns that users would be transported by car directly from their homes to community-based activities rather than by bus.

But following a meeting with management, the 20-strong group was given an assurance that users will still be able to access the centre – and that a minibus will be made available when needed.

Kirkcaldy parent Marlene Hurles said that the meeting with Central Fife Community Support Service manager Ian Wilson and centre manager Maureen McSeveney had been ‘lively’ but that it had yielded positive results.

“Parents and carers emphasised how important it is that family members should continue to use the centre as their base, especially in the mornings as this is ideal for them to meet and interact with friends and staff,” she said.

“We also pointed out that the minibus is the most suitable form of transport for some of the service users and we were assured that the bus will continue to be made available when needed.

“So, on behalf of parent carers and our family members who attend the centre, we appreciate that the managers have taken the time and effort to listen and reconsider their future plans for the use of our much loved and valued centre.”

The St Clair Centre provides support to adults aged between 16 and 65.
