Fife blizzards 1978

Fife endured its heaviest snowfall in 30 years at the beginning of February 1978.

On one day alone the region was covered by an eight-inch blanket of snow in an Arctic-like blizzard and our picture was taken in Kirkcaldy’s Middle Den.

The storm caused hazardous conditions on the roads and many shops in the centre of Kirkcaldy closed early to ensure staff got home safely.

With pubs and clubs reporting business as being “very quiet” it seemed those hardy souls determined to head out decided to go to the pictures.

Kirkcaldy’s new ABC on the High Street was an exception to the rule, with staff saying it was much busier than they had expected.
