Fife braced for increase in racism after Brexit and Trump election

FRAE Fife’s reaction comes after news that Fife has seen a rise in the number of race hate crimes already in the last year.

GMB revealed figures jumped up four per cent, to 130 incidents.

Adnan Miyasar, chairman of FRAE Fife, said the news was not unexpected.

“Some of our members have noticed that and a recent change in behaviour. There’s a verbal and behavioural problem.”

Mr Miyasar also thinks Brexit and Donald Trump’s recent US election success will have consequences for ethnic minority communities.

He said: “After the election in the United States people start to worry. I think the election will have an impact over here, especially in some of our Muslim communities. There has definitely been a rise in racism all over Europe, and this just adds ammunition.

“We’re not immune here to changes in America. We have not calculated the impact of Brexit but we do have concerns. The feedback from people is that there has been a behavioural change.”

He added: “There is a responsibility on all of us, especially on the press, to challenge this behaviour. To demonise communities is a serious thing.”
