Kirkcaldy MP, Gordon Brown, has told of his anguish over how details of his son’s medical details were published in a tabloid newspaper.
Allegations have also emerged over illegal access to Mr Brown’s Abbey National bank account some years ago.
The news is the latest revelations following on from the phone hacking scandal which has hit News International - publishers of the News of the World and The Sun - and the Metropolitan Police Service.
Last year, Mr Brown, the former Prime Minister, asked Scotland Yard if there was evidence that private investigator Glenn Mulcaire had targeted him. It is unclear whether or not there were references to the Brown family in Mulcaire’s paperwork.
A spokeswoman for the Brown family said: “The family has been shocked by the level of criminality and the unethical means by which person details have been obtained. The matter is in police hands.”
