A total of 182,307 votes were cast from an electorate 272,000.

Some 87 ballot papers were rejected, including 29 for voting for both leave AND remain.

Campaigners from the Remain team were quietly confident throughout the night as they sampled the votes being counted from 181 polling stations across the Kingdom.

By contrast, the Leave team managed just one sole representative - the table set up for their auditors remained unused all night long.
