The papers will be counted at the Michael Woods Sports Centre in Glenrothes, and Fife’s decision is expected to be announced around 4.00 a.m. on Friday.

The overall UK decision is not expected until around breakfast time tomorrow.

An army of 700 staff will be on duty in Fife to ensure the referendum runs smoothly.

Polling stations have been set up in a wide range of church halls, leisure centres and community centres.
