A small crowd of people gathered to watch Gordon Brown, former Kirkcaldy MP, perform the ribbon cutting ceremony.

It marked the end of a long campaign he led to keep post office services in the town centre following the closure of its base within Tesco last April.

Temporary postal services were run from a unit within The Postings shopping centre while public consultation exercises on two separate High Street premises were carried out.

The new Post Office at 206 High Street, is being run by sub postmaster Atif Naseer and his wife Shabana.

They also run outlets in Cupar and Dundee.

It is operating within a Premier convenience store which is being run as a franchise.

Five counters – two fortress enclosed positions, two open plan at the rear of the premises and another open one at the front designed for easy disabled access – will offer the full range of postal services.

Following the ribbon cutting, Mr Brown was given a tour of the facility and met with the nine staff who will be working there.

“The people of Kirkcaldy wanted a post office in the High Street, and that was the main argument we put forward when we were dealing with the Tesco closure,” he said.

“Finally we have achieved it and I hope this new shop, with the experienced people running it, will serve them well.”

Muhammad Akhtar, manager, said: “We hope the people of Kirkcaldy will make good use of their new post office and shop here too.”

The shop is open seven days a week.

It runs 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday; 8am to 5.30pm Saturday and 11am to 4pm Sunday.
