Three Explorer Scouts from 8th Fife (St Andrews) recently went back to basics taking part in a Bivouac Camp. Rosa Guild, Zoe Duncan and Brynja Duthie, all aged 13, as part of the Zodiac Plus Challenge Award, are challenged to spend one night per calendar month for 12 months under canvas, bivouac or bothy, completing 12 different challenges from a list of 36. On this occasion, they built and stayed in a bivouac which they built in woods.
Whilst at camp, Margaret Jones, district commissioner for east of Scotland, paid the girls a visit and congratulated them on their endeavours.
Having successfully completed the bivouac task and slept all night in it, the girls concluded that it was very comfortable and was warmer than sleeping in a tent. The next stage of their challenge will take them and the rest of the Explorer Scout unit to the Cairngorms during November.
