Glenrothes dog owners call for Fife Council rethink over dog area at park

Plans to create a specially cordoned off area within Gilvenbank Park in north Glenrothes - similar to that enjoyed by dog owners in Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy - were shelved last November.

But members of North Glenrothes Community Council are calling for a rethink in light of proposals to create a sports hub in the park.

“The park has enjoyed dog owners for many years, so it was disappointing when Fife Council rejected plans for a designated area last year,” said Denise Wallace, a community council member, and a dog owner.

“With the new MUGA play area going in and the sports hub plans, it’s felt by many owners that a designated area for dogs would prove safer for all concerned while allowing all sections of the community to enjoy the park’s surroundings.”

Denise points to the existing dog area facility in Beveridge Park as the way forward.

“I’ve spoken to other owners who all think that area is ideal for walking their pets and has proved popular since it was introduced,” said Denise.

Following her call, Jim Leitch, streets and open spaces team manager told the Gazette: “Initial feedback on the designated dog area in other parks had been that they were not successful and this is what I reported to the community council.

“However, given time they have proved more popular with dog walkers and other park goers.

“I am happy to meet any members of community group to discuss this further, and if there is enough interest we will look into introducing this at Gilvenbank Park.”
