The handmade trike was stolen from the forecourt of the Castle Furniture Project at Tom Rodger’s Mill, Cupar, on Wednesday afternoon.

The trike was donated to the charity by a family who no longer needed it and wanted it to go to a deserving child in the local community.

It was specially made for disabled/blind children, and the family of a blind local boy had purchased it and already told him he was getting his first bike.

But someone made off with it just before it was loaded onto the van to be delivered to the family.

Said Lesley Cox of the Castle Furniture Project: “Police have been informed but we’d love to see this item returned as it is so specialist we can’t replace it with another one.

“The little boy is devastated.”

The family of the boy, Joe, said: “Joe is going to be 15 in August. He was born with unilateral micropthalmia and unilateral anopthalmia which basically means his eyes did not develop properly and he has one very small eye and the other eye is missing.

“He has been registered blind since birth and has no vision at all. He was also diagnosed with autism last year and struggles with his weight as he can’t run around and play in the same way sighted children can. He does not go out to play with friends and was very much looking forward to being able to go out on his very own bike, as he put it, ‘like normal children’. We also hoped the exercise would help with his weight.“
