Inspector Joanne McEwan, of Glenrothes Police Station, said: “This sort of incident causes a great deal of distress to families who’ve lost loved ones, and will no doubt be met with shock and sadness in the village and wider community.

“This is a truly deplorable act of vandalism and we are appealing to anyone who has any information that would help our enquiries, please speak to a police officer.

“I’d urge anyone who saw or heard anything unusual at the cemetery to contact us.”

The cemetery in Kinross Road on the outskirts of the town contains a number of First World War graves which last year were the focus of special 100th anniversary commemorations to mark the outbreak of the Great War.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
