Family and friends of Reiss Baptie (15) are also supporting a race club in Fife which is helping him make the most of his condition.

An appeal is under way to raise £2000 for a special bike for Rhys, who has limited movement but who benefits greatly from keeping active.

His mum Fiona (44) also hopes the fund-raising can continue to buy another bike for Race Running, the Dunfermline-based club which Reiss is joining, to boost its efforts to support youngsters with similar needs.

Fiona’s work colleague at New Look in Glenrothes, Shannon O’Connor, has launched a Just Giving page for donations, while shop manager Sharon Thomson did a bungee jump on Sunday to boost funds.

Local pub the Dixon Arms is also backing the appeal with an ‘80s Night on August 27.

A grateful Fiona said the appeal was fairly close to its initial target already.

The race running bike, she added, would be very good for Reiss, in addition to regular other activities such as swimming and horse riding.

“He needs to keep himself moving and he needs a sense of achievement and being involved,” said Fiona.

Reiss’ condition affects his muscles and he needs help with dressing, feeding, and generally moving around, while he communicates via sign language. See his page at Just Giving
