Our Bright Future is a £33 million nationwide programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, giving opportunities to young people to connect with their natural environment.

There are three different types of Modern Apprenticeships available across Fife for 16-24-year-olds living in Fife who are not in education, employment or training. These include horticulture, trees and timber and rural skills and, by the end of the programme, apprentices will have a qualification and range of skills to help them find employment in the rural sector.

Jordan McKinney and Ben Kirkbride have been doing a Modern Apprenticeship in Rural Skills over the last year.

Throughout the programme they’ve gained industry-recognised qualifications as well as practical experience in grounds maintenance, gardening and conservation skills.

David Stockwell, general manager at the Ecology Centre, said: “We have been delighted to participate in the Our Bright Future Programme and hugely value the contribution that Jordan and Ben have made over the last year.”

Jordan added: “The training has been great. I’ve really enjoyed it and liked the changing seasons and understanding all the different jobs that need to be done for each season.”
