Iconic pier setting for St Andrews charity walk

Tara Browne, who is studying for a MLitt in Management, has organised a charity walk called ‘Walking Home For Christmas’ – part of a UK-wide campaign on behalf of Walking with the Wounded (WWTW), a registered UK charity which supports wounded veterans and their families.

She said: “I am a passionate advocate for veterans.

“I grew up in the military and had a grandfather and great-uncles that fought in and survived World War II.

“Since I can remember, I’ve always been moved by the extraordinary bravery of our men and women in the armed forces and have actively sought ways to thank them for their courage and sacrifice and let them know they are not forgotten.

“On Saturday, December 3, I will be hosting a charity walk on behalf of WWTW whose mission is ‘To fund the re-training and re-education of our servicemen and women, both veterans and those leaving The Armed Forces today’.

“WWTW finance new qualifications, education and training programmes for those who are injured and help with their career transition.

“This enables the blind, the burn victims, the mentally injured, the amputees and all the other wounded to rebuild their lives and to return to the work place.”

“‘Walking Home For Christmas’ is WWTW’s annual Christmas charity campaign to support homeless and vulnerable veterans.

“By supporting this charity walk, this Christmas you can help them to assist veterans in leading independent lives through employment,” said Tara.

Last year over 2000 people across the UK signed up to WWTW’s Christmas campaign. It raised more than £240,000 and over 5,000 miles were walked – supporting more than 250 vulnerable veterans to re-integrate back into society. 

Tara hopes to see lots of locals join her.

“The walk starts at 10am and I’ll be leading the group from the Gateway Building/School of Management to the end of the Pier and back – a 3.86 km walk.

“All participants will receive hot chocolate and high-fives at the end of the walk – feel free to wear your festive Christmas garb like Santa hats, Elf hats or shoes!

“In total, I hope to raise at least £300 for WWTW through the walk.”
