Investigation launched after hand drill falls from Forth Road Bridge just missing two people

A full investigation has been launched by the operators of the site after the hand drill fell from the 40 metre high bridge which connects Edinburgh to Fife, just missing two members of the public by just a matter of feet in the close call.

The incident happened yesterday (Wednesday, December 2) when the two people, who wish to remain anonymous, were walking underneath the suspension bridge.

During their walk, the hand drill suddenly fell from the bridge above during ongoing maintenance, just missing them and landing around 15 feet in front of the couple.

BEAR Scotland, who manage the site, said they are taking the incident “extremely seriously” and have launched a full investigation.

The investigation will include looking at how far the dangerous object fell.

BEAR were reported to be on-site early on Thursday morning checking all safety measures, and have confirmed a full investigation has been initiated.

A BEAR Scotland spokesperson said: “We are taking this incident extremely seriously and a full investigation has been initiated. The outcome will be shared with all relevant parties.

“Appropriate steps have already been taken to secure work areas on the bridge.”

BEAR has been in touch with the people concerned and will keep them informed on how they are addressing the situation.

The incident comes as work is currently taking place on the bridge as part of an ongoing project to replace its main expansion joints.
