Kennoway Legion tells vandals: '˜Leave us alone'

The latest incident happened late last Wednesday night, with rooftop intruders ripping out the club’s telephone cables and damaging the alarm system.

Hugh Nisbet, secretary, said it was the latest in a catalogue of incidents which had been going on for years and was being committed by “one generation of idiots after another”.

Thousands of pounds have been spent repairing broken windows and door damage, while groups of youths regularly climbed on the roof.

Attempts to talk to them were often met with a “torrent of abuse” or egg throwing, he said.

Once, when a window was smashed, a youth told Mr Nisbet he had done it ‘because you don’t show us any respect’.

“It just seems to be never ending and it’s getting beyond a joke,” said Mr Nisbet “It’s just unbelievable.”

He believed the British Legion was targeted possibly because the youths found it easiest to get at.

“Why is it us? – it’s always the British Legion,” he added. “We are a charity organisation.”

The club, with around 30-40 members, has occupied its current building, at The Cross in New Road, since 1961, although the Royal British Legion has existed in Kennoway since 1949.

Levenmouth Community Sergeant Craig Fyall asked anyone with information to contact Police Scotland on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Improved CCTV has been installed in the Bishops Court area and local action plans put in place,” he added.

“We’ve already seen a reduction but will continue to conduct high-visibility patrols, where operational demands allow, and work with the community to tackle anti-social behaviour.”
