Kinross man set for return to Everest

A Kinross man who was caught up in the deadly earthquake in Nepal last year while attempting to climb Mount Everest is going back.

James Grieve (52), originally from Kennoway, was unable to make it to the summit after the earthquake, which struck in May 2015, caused a huge avalanche while he was at base camp.

He was lucky to survive it, but vowed he would go back to the country and make it to the top of the world’s highest mountain – a feat he will once again attempt in April.

James said: “When I was seven-years-old, I made a promise to myself that I would do it, so I suppose I’m being true to myself by going back.

“Nobody can believe that I’m doing it. But hopefully lightning doesn’t strike twice!”

James will travel with six others on April 5, including Dan Mazur, a mountain guide who was there last year. “Dan is very experienced and has been on a lot of expeditions so I have a lot of trust in him.”

James, an engineer who works off-shore, has a partner Shirley, and a two-year-old son, also James, and he says they’re “100 per cent” behind him.

James is currently trying to raise as much money as he can for Children 1st, Scotland’s children’s charity and he’s also looking for sponsorship to help him make it to the mountain.
