Kirkcaldy Beach Highland Games to return

It wouldn't be the Highland games without the dancers.

After last year’s waterfront event was a roaring success, drawing around 3000 to Kirkcaldy beach, organisers are looking to add something a little bit different this year.

While the usual strongman favourites like caber tossing and shot putt will feature – along with the running and children’s events and Highland dancing displays – this year there will also be a biking demonstration.

It is hoped that the inclusion of the cycling event could lead to a race along the beach in the coming years.

The pipers helped get last year's event into gear.

Laura Laird, of organisers Kirkcaldy4All, said that the event brings people into Kirkcaldy town centre from all over Scotland and beyond.

She said: “We have all the traditional heavy events, but we also have athletics and running events, and kids races, so there’s fun for all the family.

“We’ll have around 15 stalls along the prom from local community groups, charities, and food sellers. crafters and artists.

“The kids will be doing Highland dancing demonstrations, along with pipe bands.

It's everyone's favourite, the caber toss.

“It’s bringing people down into Kirkcaldy and making the best of the waterfront.

“One of the nice things about Kirkcaldy is that we’re on the waterfront where we’ve perhaps not been making the most of it in the past.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come and enjoy the views, the beach, and hopefully the sunshine like last year, and perhaps head into town afterwards and maybe get something to eat and drink, or do some shopping.

“We had around 3000 people come down last year, and it was very popular among families.

“The competitors travel up from all over Scotland to come and take part just because it’s so different and so unique.”

And this year will see a new sand cycling demonstration.

If it proves a hit with spectators, there may be scope in future for a bike race across the sands.

Laura added: “We’re obviously trying to improve on the event every year.

“This year we’re hoping to have a biking demonstration on the sands.

“If it goes well and people enjoy it, then perhaps we could have a biking race next year.”

The Kirkcaldy Beach Highland Games will return on Saturday, September 15, between 10.30am and 3pm.
