kirkcaldy’s 5th Fife Scout Group became Scottish Champions at the weekend when they scooped the Blacks of Greenock National Camping Competition 2012.
The team members, four girls and two boys, were: Jennifer Ritchie, Chloe Whyte, Kiah McIntosh, Reagan McLauchlan, Robbie Swanson and Olivia Ewan.
The team’s success highlighted the tremendous effort that both they and the group leaders have put in over the last six months in winning Kirkcaldy District and East of Scotland zonal qualifiers, culminating in their win at the Scottish finals.
The competition was held at Fordell Firs Activity Centre over the weekend, when the eight top teams from around Scotland took part in the final event.
The teams competing had to set up their campsite for the weekend, cook all meals on open fires and do bases such as first aid, pioneering and numerous other challenges.
The 5th Fife, which meets in the Scout hut on Dunnikier Road, won the Lyall Trophy and a cheque from Blacks of Greenock for £500.
The group has won the Scottish Championship on two previous occasions, and has received three second places and a third place in the last seven years.
David Torrance MSP for Kirkcaldy, who is also a Scout Leader at 5th Fife, Kirkcaldy, has put a motion to the Scottish Parliament congratulating the group on its success and outstanding achievements this year.
He said: “They all did a tremendous job and put in a lot of hard work to ensure they were in with the best chance of winning.
“It all paid off and I am delighted for their success.”
