Let's turn the rink pink with Fife Flyers

For one weekend only, Fife Flyers are adding a fourth shade to their strips as they turn the rink pink for a special fundraiser.

And they are urging their fans to ‘think pink’ as they head to Saturday’s game against Dundee Stars.

Flyers are one of several teams in the Elite League to stage ‘rink pink’ nights in support of cancer awareness.

The club’s initiative –which has been running for several seasons – sees them team up with Breast Cancer Care Scotland.

Flyers’ player Chase Schaber joined Linda Selman and Liz Ferguson, both volunteers from the charity organisation, to launch the event with a pink-themed photo shoot at the Fife Ice Arena this week.

And he hopes the fans will join in the fun and the fundraising.

He said: “I think this is for an amazing cause and it should be done every single year.

“I’ve played in games where everyone has shown up wearing pink and it’s pretty cool when you see that. It’s nice to know that so many people care and that they are aware.

“This will be a really important game.”

Flyers fans have been urged to add something pink to their hockey night outfits.

It could be anything from a hat to a wig, or even some lippie ... and that goes for the men too!

And the colour will also be transferred to the ice as Flyers play in specially designed pink strips which will then be auctioned off straight after the final buzzer.

A club spokesman said: ‘‘This will be our third year working with Breast Cancer Care Scotland.

“Rink Pink allows us to create awareness for the charity and the work it does, as well as allowing fans to have some fun whilst fundraising.”

“Cancer affects so many of us, and in so many different ways.

“Working with the team from Breast Cancer Care Scotland at ‘Rink Pink’ allows us to unite the whole of Fife Ice Arena on game night.”

He added: “It’s great to see the home and away fans, as well as the teams and the staff, unite together to help raise money for this very worthwhile cause.”

Liz Ferguson,Breast Cancer Care Scotland volunteer, welcomed the club’s community initiative. She said: “We’re so grateful to everyone at Fife Flyers for supporting Breast Cancer Care for a third year.

“The money raised will help Breast Cancer Care to continue to provide free services including; support over the phone with a nurse or someone who’s been there, welcoming online forums, reliable information and local group support.”

Rink Pink will see Fife Flyers stage an auction and a raffle, with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Care Scotland.

And the raffle will include one fan’s artwork which has impressed many this season.

Rebecca Thomson has published a number of her sketches of the players on social media – with the players themselves retweeting the images.

Now the Dundee University art student has donated one of netminder Shane Owen to be included in the weekend raffle.

The fundraiser will also feature a number of other prizes.

There will also be an auction straight after the final buzzer with the one-off pink tops sold to the highest bidders.

Fans who want to take part are asked to sit in Section B.

If you just want to watch the bidding then please take a seat in neighbouring Sections A and C.

The fans making the highest bids will go home with a very pink – and very smelly! - game-worn jersey.
