Looking Back: Adam Smith Theatre in the 1970s
One of Kirkcaldy's most famous buildings, the b-listed Adam Smith Theatre sits on the corner of Bennochy Road and St Brycedale Avenue.
It was built after Provost Michael Beveridge left money in his will for a building to be erected as a memorial to Adam Smith. Work began in 1894 and it was officially opened five years later on October 11 1899 by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie who said it was “a hall with a fine organ and stage suitable for concerts, charades, private theatricals, meetings of philanthropic committees, lectures upon interesting and instructive topics and entertainments of all kinds”.
