Looking back: Brigadier Doyle at New Rothes House 1976

And as he leaves his desk at New Rothes House for the last time, there have been many battles of a different nature to the ones he faced during his army career. Having to oversee the collapse of the Rothes Colliery, on which the town had been founded, at a time when there were jobs for just 800 in six factories when the population stood at 9000, being just one of them. But as the Dublin born Brigadier leaves office he also leaves a prospering town with a sense of its own identity.
