Looking back: Crossgate, Cupar

This photo from our archives takes us back only four years or so, and is likely to bring back bad memories for shopkeepers in Cupar's Crossgate.

Some of them even found their livelihoods under threat because of the disruption caused by the £1.5 million scheme aimed at improving the town’s traffic flow.

The work being carried out in this picture is the widening of the pavement on the west side of the road, in preparation for the controversial and delicate project to re-locate The Cross –the first time it had been moved since Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations in 1887.

Despite misgivings at the time, the project has been hailed a huge success.
