Looking back: Forth Road Bridge construction

Work began on building the bridge in 1958, with major amendments made to roads on both sides, which would make their approach.
The total cost of the construction came to £19.5 million - nearly £39m in today’s money - though the heaviest cost was the lives of seven of the workers.
It was eventually opened on September 4, 1964 by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, closing the ferry service that so many Fifers had used over the years.
