Looking Back: Kirkcaldy High Street closes to traffic

In May 1973 Kirkcaldy High Street was closed to traffic as part of a pedestrian '˜Walkabout' experiment.

It was repeated on each Saturday of the month to see if there was an appetite for pedestrianising the High Street permanently - and it was hailed as a success.

The Fife Free Press reported: “Most of the multiple stores agreed the experiment was ‘a good thing for shoppers’.

“But one store manager commented that he would prefer to see what would happen on a wet day before passing judgement.”

However, despite getting the thumbs up the scheme was abandoned - but as we now know, that was only temporarily.

Do you remember this experiment?
