Looking back: Tayside Works, Newburgh, 1920

This image takes us back to 1920 and the heyday of the linoleum industry in Newburgh.

It shows workers trimming the linoleum at Tayside Works, which was founded in 1891 and at one time was the town’s largest employer, with a workforce of more than 400.

But in 1978 the business suddenly collapsed and almost all the employees lost their jobs, save for a handful kept on by the factory’s new owner.

A modest amount of linoleum was produced in the following two years but in 1980 part of the factory was destroyed by fire and production ceased altogether.
