Looking back: Torbain Primary School fire 1975

In July 1975 most of Torbain Primary School in Kirkcaldy was burned to the ground.

It was the latest in a series of fires over the previous seven months, and the fourth largest, All had occurred on a Thursday.

Fife Fire Brigade received a call at around 3am and had the blaze under control within an hour of arriving.

But the fire had destroyed two-thirds of the school’s 20 classrooms and caused millions of pounds worth of damage.

In April of that year the former Co-op building on the High Street had been set ablaze, as had St Brycedale Church Hall in June.

And just 48 hours after the Torbain blaze another major fire caused serious damage to the Old Kirk.
