Loooking Back: Black Watch given freedom of Kirkcaldy
In March of 1996 the Black Watch regiment was awarded the Freedom of the District by Kirkcaldy District Council
They marked the occasion with a parade through the town, beginning with a display in the Town Square and ending back at their Hunter Street base.
A citation scroll was awarded to Brigadier Garry Barnett, Colonel of the regiment, by Kirkcaldy’s Provost, Robert King.
As reported by the Fife Free Press, Provost King said: “Many important civic occasions have taken place in this Town House and Town Square over the years but none will surpass today’s great occasion.
“Over the centuries the Black Watch has found the Kirkcaldy district a strong recruiting area for the Regiment.
“It is only fitting that this is the venue for today’s ceremony.”
