St Andrews’ brand new M&S Foodhall opened its doors to customers today (Wednesday) with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The event saw customers queuing early in order to be amongst the first to explore the new 9000 sq ft store on Largo Road which includes more than 4500 foodand drink lines and a selection of flowers, cards and gift wrap.
A range of specialty pastries and cakes will also be freshly baked each day in the in-store bakery.
Manager Derek Durno, who opened the store with long-serving M&S employee Jean Rookes, said he was delighted the new store had resulted in the creation of 70 jobs, 60 from the local area and ten for staff who have transferred from other stores.
“The staff are so excited and have been really looking forward to welcoming our customers.
“We have recruited across the local area and have employees of all age ranges from school pupils and students to more mature people. It’s a great mix and we’ve got a fantastic team here.”
The store was opened at 10am with the help of a piper and one of M&S’s trademark characters, Colin the Caterpillar, of the popular children’s birthday cake fame.
Mr Durno said the decision was taken not to have a cafe like other M&S stores, so that it could provide customers with the universal range of products, including a Christmas ordering facility.
Mr Durno, who has managed three other stores including Dundee’s Gallagher retail park store, said he is also looking forward to getting to know the local community.
