A man who subjected three children to years of sexual and physical abuse has been sent to jail.

George Johnston (48) was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh earlier today to a minimum of seven years in prison and a further three-year supervision period for attempted rape, lewd and libidinous offences and the physical assault of three young children, which occurred in Glenrothes between 2003 and 2013.

All of Johnston’s victims were between the ages of seven and 16 at the time the offences were committed, which were then reported to Police Scotland in 2014.

Following a thorough investigation by Fife’s Divisional Rape Investigation Unit, Johnstone was detained in April last year and subsequently convicted in August.

After sentence was passed Detective Inspector Scott Davidson from the Divisional Rape Investigation Unit in Fife said: “George Johnston’s victims spent long periods of their childhood suffering horrendous levels of abuse at his hands, it is only thanks to their courage in coming forward to police that he was brought to justice for his crimes.

He added: “I would like to thank Johnston’s victims for their continued support and assistance and I hope that as with today’s sentencing, they can begin to move on with their lives.

“Police Scotland treats all reports of sexual crime with the utmost seriousness and regardless of when the offences occurred, we will investigate the matter thoroughly and professionally to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
