Investigating officers are now looking to trace another male who may have been injured in the assault and who may have information relevant to the ongoing inquiry.
The altercation happened at around 3.30am on Sunday on St Margaret Street near Dunfermline Library.
A 33 year-old man was subsequently transferred to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment but has since been discharged.
