A Sunday morning re-run of the opening scenes of an iconic film along a famous St Andrews beach has been stunningly successful.
Thirty years after ‘Chariots of Fire’ was filmed on St Andrews’ West Sands, runners of all abilities set off on the ‘Chariots 2011’ 5km beach race to provide a memorable re-enactment.
The event, which also marked the film’s 30th anniversary, brought out people of all ages who ran down the famous beach resplendent in white with Vangelis’ music playing, including two members of the original beach cast crew.
Over £800 has been raised so far for Sue Ryder and organisers are hopeful that this will have been doubled.
Organiser Ben McLeod told the Citizen: ‘‘Chariots 2011 put the fun into fundraising.
‘‘The route was a simple out and back down the West Sands, and in the community spirit we also organised a beach clean to coincide with the race.’’
