A family had sought permission to erect the plaque at North Point in memory of their father, who had his ashes scattered in the area in 2014.

When a family member went to pay their respects at the site they noticed the mahogany and stainless steel plate had been stolen and contacted police.

The theft happened sometime between November last year and February 14, 2016.

Local officers are now carrying out inquiries to trace those responsible and anyone who can assist with their investigation is asked to come forward.

Constable Kate Blackwell from Dalgety Bay Police Station said: “This family have been left deeply upset at the theft of this plaque, which was put in place in memory of their father.

“We currently do not have a definitive time period for when this theft occurred and so would ask that anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity around North Point at Aberdour Beach over the past three months contacts police immediately.
