“A pleasure and a privilege.”
That was the message for former RAF airframe fitter Armer Henderson (94) when he was presented with a Veterans Badge from Lindsay Roy MP.
Mr Henderson, from Lilac Bank, Methil, is an American by birth but moved to Fife as a toddler when his mum returned to Scotland to look after her mother.
When war broke out, he wanted to enlist but needed permission from the American embassy before joining the RAF at Grangemouth.
After the war, he had to return to the embassy again to swear allegiance to the flag because he had fought for Britain!
Presenting him with his badge and certificate on behalf of the UK Government and the Ministry of Defence, Mr Roy said: “We must never forget what people like Armer did, and continue to do, for us, in his case especially so because he was an American and volunteered to help another country.”
