The move comes after information, which was given to the Bryant family by a member of the public a month ago, was passed on to officers investigating the whereabouts of the missing man.

A police search team using specially trained dogs, will comb an as yet unspecified area of land close to the former cold war military defence site, which is now a popular tourist attraction.

Mr Bryant Snr said the information they had received had been followed up on by investigating officers and he had received confirmation today that the search was to take place.

A police spokesman said: “Acting on information received from the public, specialist resources are today conducting a search of woodland in the St Andrews area as part of the on-going investigating into missing man Allan Bryant.”

The missing man’s father Allan Bryant Snr added: “Nothing must be left to chance with the search for my missing son so we are pleased that police are following up this lead.”

Despite a huge police missing persons enquiry and high profile media coverage, Allan Bryant has not been seen since he left Styx nightclub in Glenrothes at around 2am on November 3, 2013.
