More Glenrothes buildings could close in Council review

All seven area committees in Fife, including Glenrothes, have been asked to examine which council-run facilities can be taken of the books or transferred to community groups to run, as the Fife authority seek to deal with the challenging financial climate.

Three ‘core’ sites - Auchmuty Learning Centre, Lomond Centre and Kinglassie’s Mitchell Hall - are to be retained as hubs, while discussions with communities over the future of eight others, Cadham Community Centre, Markinch Town Hall, Thornton Public Hall, Stenton Jubilee Centre, White House, Star Village Hall, Coaltown of Balgonie’s Victoria Hall and the Milton of Balgonie Village Hall, are to be conducted to assess demand.

And, following a motion put forward by committee chairman, Bill Brown, which was approved by six votes to five, Collydean and Woodside Community Centres, Macedonia and Rimbleton tenants meeting rooms and Thornton Pensioners Club, which had been earmarked for possible quick disposal, will also now go to consultation.

However, the future of Caskieberran and Pitteuchar meeting rooms, Leslie Town Hall, and the community centre, ‘small’ community centre and clinic / library buildings in Kinglassie, could be disposed of in the coming months, a move that could ultimately help bring savings of £65,000 from running costs for facilities across the area.
