A Glenrothes mother and her three-year-old daughter “feared for their lives” when their front door was kicked to pieces as they lay asleep, reports NEIL HENDERSON.

The incident happened around 4.30am on Hogmanay, but details have only began to emerge over the past few days.

A handbag was stolen from the property during the incident, before the intruders fled the scene after realising the flat was occupied.

James Walker - boyfriend of the woman, who doesn’t want to be identified - arrived home after being summoned by his partner to find the front door smashed into two pieces and hanging off its hinges.

A shocked Mr Walker, who has lived at the Hillcrest Housing Association property since 2005, told the ‘Gazette’: “I rushed home following my girlfriend’s ‘phone call to find the total devastation - it was unbelievable.

“Seeing the mess I expected the flat to be ransacked, but they had run off after one had opened the bedroom door and saw my girlfriend on the ‘phone to police.”

He said there had been instances of anti-social behaviour in the block in recent months.

He said the incident had left his partner terrfied.

Mr Walker added: “I’ve lived here for seven years with no trouble whatsoever.”

“But my girlfriend is now too frightened to come back to the flat.

“I don’t know what we are going to do.”

Fife Police confirmed that they had made arrests in connection with the incident at Brodie Court.
