A new retail park comprising big-name stores could be open in Cupar in time for next Christmas, if controversial plans get the go-ahead.

North east Fife planning committee is due to be asked next month to approve an application for up to seven stores on the site in South Road, Cupar, which was bought from Tesco just over a year ago by London and Scottish Developments.

The site had been earmarked for a new Tesco superstore but plans fell through when the retail giant hit financial difficulties.

Chris Collins, development surveyor with Glasgow-based London and Scottish Developments, told Cupar Community Council this week that a number of top retailers had shown an interest in the proposed units, although he wasn’t at liberty to identify them at present.

He said that, if it’s approved, work would begin on the development early next year and it would be open by Christmas, bringing hundreds of jobs to the town.

However, the community council, which has already objected to the plans, remained unconvinced.

Members likened the proposed stores to ‘aircraft hangars’ that would ruin Cupar’s image as a market town.
