GLENROTHES has been given a much-needed jobs boost, reports MIKE DELANEY.
Forty posts have been created with the opening of Poundland’s first store in the town last Friday.
The discount shopping company said the opening represented a quarter of a million pounds investment in Glenrothes.
Poundworld claims to offer 5000 products in store, including brand names in a range of household essentials, textiles, toiletries and groceries.
The new 6,000 square foot store - in the unit formerly tenanted by Peacock’s - will also be home to a Discount UK outlet, the company’s new multi-price brand.
Spread across one third of the store, Discount UK is said to offer over 3,000 products such as home furnishings, electricals and branded toys.
The company said the store would help “cost conscious shoppers beat the recession by offering a ‘value’ alternative to other high street retailers.”
The family-owned company, which was founded in 1997, has hundreds of stores all over Britain, including oen in Kirkcaldy.
Trading director, Chris Edwards Junior, said: “We’re really delighted to be opening our first store in Glenrothes and to be creating 40 new jobs for the town.
“By combining a Poundworld and Discount UK store in one outlet, we are offering our customers the best possible value and allowing them to take advantage of great offers on higher-value items over £1 that we aren’t able to sell in a purely Poundworld store.
“We look forward to welcoming customers and we hope the exciting brand split will prove a big hit with savvy shoppers in Glenrothes.”
Kingdom Centre manager, Robert Winter, said: “We are pleased to welcome Poundworld as our latest tenant. “The arrival of Poundworld is work in progress as the landlord continues to work towards reducing the number of empty units and improving the overall retail mix of the centre which will benefit all of our customers.”
