WORK to transform John Dixon Park in Markinch gets underway next Monday.
Led by local group Markinch Plus, the £96,000 re-development has been nearly two years in the planning and will see the run-down playpark replaced with state of the art play equipment for children and ‘green gym’ pieces for adults.
Markinch Plus have raised the money through various grants and fund-raising.
Joanna Jenkins of Markinch Plus hopes the new playpark will benefit all of the community.
She said: “I’m very excited that we have got a date for work to start. It would just be nice if the whole place was upgraded.
“I have been to the school and have visited the health group there. They are keen to use it during lunch time and play time.
‘‘They might also do a few posters about the park to let children know the park is there and to use it or lose it kind of thing.
“It’s good to involve them. It would be nice if all the community and different groups get behind us. We are very much looking to get families down here.
“I just think it will be somewhere that the whole community can come together and use it.”
Work on the park is expected to take four to six weeks to complete.
Speaking at the site Joanna said: “Ideally we can get it up just after the schools go back and have a party to open it.
‘‘I just can’t wait till it’s all up and running. There is so little for the children to do here. It’s the summer holidays and the weather isn’t bad, but nobody apart from us is here.
“We are also hoping to have the skate park worked on by graffiti artists to brighten it up.”
Markinch Plus also recently took ownership of the ‘cage’ multi-sports area at the park, already spending £1,400 on minor repairs.
Markinch Plus are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help, call Joanna on 750 058.
