Trustees of a fund set up to benefit the town of Leslie have offered to help families pay for the repair of 65 gravestones damaged by vandals.

Trustees of the Skene Trust made the kind gesture after reading about the desecration of the Kinross Road cemetery in the Gazette.

There has been widespread anger and dismay throughout the close-knit community over the damage, which police are continuing to investigate.

“Like everybody we have been appalled by the vandalism and myself and my fellow trustees felt it only proper to offer assistance after reading about the damage,” said Andrew Forgan.

“The trust is there to benefit the town but has strict guidelines on how it can be used, therefore it is sometimes difficult to find the sort of causes that fit that criteria.

“However we have discussed it with Fife Council and we are keen to offer our assistance in whatever way we can.”

Council officers are now assessing the scale of the repair work and the costs associated with it.

Liz Murphy, bereavement services said the offer was greatly welcomed.

“Technically the responsibility of the headstones is that of the family, but with an incident such as this we will assist them,” explained Liz.

“There are national standards of repair which we have to adhere to so we are now in the process of assessing the financial extent of the repair. and take it from there.”

Any family affected by the damage is asked to contact Liz at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on (01592) 583524.
