Columnist: Fulfilling the role of a dutiful father...

Twice in the last week my role as the dutiful father has been as audience member, watching my two daughters taking to the stage.

On Saturday night at the Adam Smith Theatre the eldest was part of the Kirkcaldy Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s excellent production of ‘HMS Pinafore’. A full review sits elsewhere in this paper, but personally I thoroughly enjoyed it and can tell you from first hand experience that it took months and months of rehearsals and hard work from a group of dedicated people, and all in their own spare time.

Last night I was at Rothes Halls to see the youngest flying the flag for St Maries, and by extension Kirkcaldy, in the Fife heats of the primary schools Glee competition.

St Maries made it through to the Fife final at the Alhambra in 2015 and were first runners up, so have set the bar high for themselves. I hadn’t yet been at the time of writing but predict that as each song began I’d have been turning to the eldest to ask who it’s by and will have been answered with a sigh and roll of the eyes.

The competition itself is growing year upon year and is now moving on to Edinburgh and beyond. It’s the brainchild of Linda Cormie who deserves massive credit.

For the three or four of you who read my tattoo column last week and have been unable to sleep since, wondering how it’s getting on, the good news is that the tattoo is fine and rash is dissipating day by day. A bit too slowly for my liking and I’ve ditched the nappy cream, fine for a baby’s bum, humiliatingly too strong for my weedy pipe cleaner of an arm, in favour of Vaseline, which seems to be doing the trick.

Still, it’s not too much of a problem as it’s hardly t-shirt weather at the moment, is it?
