Comment: More important than ever to celebrate our High Street heroes

It was heartening to see so many Kirkcaldy names listed in this week’s Scottish Government roll of honour for High Street heroes.

Recognising the people who make a difference, and go the extra mile, is more important than ever - and it gives us another reason to champion the positives that surround our town centre.

Scotland Loves Local is the theme of the campaign which aims to get people to focus their time, and their spend, on the shops on their doorstep - something that has become even more important as we wrestle with a prolonged lockdown.

And, Kirkcaldy is perfectly placed to take the High Street heroes theme and make it an annual award.

The more we celebrate the great work being done, the more we can change those long-held perceptions that cling stubbornly to a memory of a High Street that hasn’t existed for many years.

The more we support those who go the extra mile, the greater the benefits for all - businesses, the staff they employ, and the developers and individuals interesting in investing in our High Street.

We may not be able to stage awards ceremonies and gather together to celebrate, but, one day soon, we will - so maybe now is the perfect time to look ahead to late 2021 and Kirkcaldy’s own High Street Heroes event.

This town may well be its toughest critic at times, but it is also its greatest champion.

Let’s dust off some pedestals and put on them the people who are genuinely making a difference for the good of us all.
