This Is 40 - recommended by Paul McCabe

The “sort of” sequel to ‘Knocked Up’ sees Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles as Pete and Debbie who are now both coming up to the dreaded 4-0.

Pete’s business is failing, someone’s stealing from Debbie’s, they’re not getting along, their kids don’t stop arguing and their own parents are causing them trouble.

That’s about it really. It’s a bit thin on plot to be honest but as it’s a Judd Apatow film there are plenty of genuinely funny moments, mostly of the gross-out variety, showing that as married couples get older they don’t necessarily get wiser.

Rudd and Mann are excellent and there’s a strong supporting cast, including a superb cameo from Melissa McCarthy (which you see more of in the credits). Yes, it runs out of steam a little towards the end but if you like Apatow’s other films then you should enjoy this one too. Particularly recommended for fans of Graham Parker and The Rumour, if such a thing exists.
